Consider the following scenario:
·         On a computer that is running Windows Server 2003 Service Pack 2 (SP2), you install Internet Information Services (IIS) 6.0.
·         You have applied update KB970430 or update KB973917.
In this scenario, a memory leak occurs in Strmfilt.dll after the computer runs for some time. When the memory leak occurs, Lsass.exe crashes and the computer restarts automatically. Additionally, the following events are logged in the Application log:
Event ID: 1000
Category: None
Source: Application Error
Type: Error
Message: Faulting application lsass.exe, version 5.2.3790.0, faulting module schannel.dll, version 5.2.3790.4530, fault address <memory address>.
Event ID: 1015
Category: None
Source: Winlogon
Type: Error
Message: A critical system process, <system drive>:\WINDOWS\system32\lsass.exe, failed with status code c0000005. The machine must now be restarted.
This issue occurs because the Strmfilt.dll file does not free allocated memory correctly. Therefore, a memory leak occurs in the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service process (LSASS).
